Chapter 10

“Where did you even get that thing?” Zane laughed, pointing at my grumpy-cat onesie as I walked downstairs.

“It’s soft.” I stuck my tongue out as I mosied into the kitchen. “Do you want popcorn?”

“I’m okay, thanks,” Zane called from the couch as he surfed through a couple more channels.

Opening the snack cupboard, I looked through the selection of chips, crackers, and jerky.

Things between Zane and me had pretty much gone back to normal--or close enough that I could pretend. It helped that I’d disappeared upstairs as soon as we’d gotten to the house, drowned myself in a long shower to scrub off the sweat from the club before putting on my unsexiest--and most comfortable--pajamas.

My nerves were fried, though. From the club, from Skyler’s abrupt departure with a total stranger...from that kiss with Zane.

“Has Sky texted you?” I called from the kitchen after checking my own phone.

“No. Still worrying?” Zane’s voice came from just over my shoulder and I jumped.

“No.” I tucked my phone away and blew out a sigh. “But, if she gets sold into a human trafficking ring, I need to make sure I text her I told you so.”

“Wow.” He chuckled. “At least if that happens, I have a very specific set of skills.”

“Okay Liam Neeson, are you going to challenge her kidnappers to a game of beer pong?” I turned around, leaning back against the counter and crossing my arms.

“Don’t be silly.” He scoffed. “We don’t even have beer.”

“We have rum.” I grinned.

“Rum pong is synonymous with alcohol poisoning.” He took a step back. “...Little miss one drink per hour. But, if you really want to take your mind off Skyler, we could play a little game of truth or dare.”

“Truth or dare?” With a sigh, I turned back to the cabinets and poked around in hopes I’d missed some snack that might distract me. “Like when we were kids?”

“Yeah, why not?”

He had a point. Looking back at him, I considered, but finally shook my head. “I’m not thirteen anymore, Zane. You probably missed that, considering you disappeared for a few years, but I grew up.”The jab clearly didn’t bother him.

“Chicken?” His impish grin widened. “Sounds like somebody’s got some juicy secrets.”

“Fine…” I walked past him, picking up the bottle and uncorking it. “But I definitely don’t want to be sober for this. You okay with drinking game rules?”

“Oh, boy.” Amused, he took a seat at the kitchen table. “This should be interesting.”

“If you choose truth…” I grabbed two shot glasses and sat across from him. “You have to take a sip. But if you pass altogether, you have to take a shot. No lying, and no telling each other to do disgusting stuff like lick a toilet seat.”

“Come on, Hail.” Zane grimaced, swatting at the air. “I wouldn’t do that.”

“Tell it to Timmy Brandskem.” I raised an eyebrow at Zane and he got a far off, thoughtful look in his eyes. “Gangly kid? Wispy mustache, spoke in a fake French accent because he thought girls would like it?”

“Oh yeah.
